Faculty returned to campus the week of August 29, preparing classrooms, studios, and gathering spaces to welcome students on September 7. Highlights of these weeks included:
In the morning on August 31, the full faculty and staff delved into school culture and how systemic issues can and do manifest on our campus; and in the afternoon, teachers and advisers explored tools for creating anti-racist spaces in classrooms and homerooms.
Orientation At Burke, both new and returning students participate in Orientation – building connections within each grade and acclimating to the rhythms of school together. Held on September 6, Orientation activities ranged from tech training (for the 1:1 iPad program) to all-grade gatherings to individual meetings with faculty advisors. Or in the words of Head of Middle School Susan H., "We will enjoy some games and some business."
Opening Assembly On September 7, students delved directly into classes, with an all-school assembly during the midday community block. Held in the newly-renovated Burke Gym, the opening assembly featured Student Government Co-Presidents Carrie J. '24 and Riley D. '24, 6th Head of School Steve M., and High School Dean of Students Alexis M. – along with a spontaneous selfie video to welcome Steve to Burke and varying levels of enthusiastic participation in a "Don't Stop Believing" dance party.
