Earlier this month, the 10th grade participated in their first Leadership & Civic Engagement Retreat, centered on "Project Soapbox," a public speaking program that invites young people to speak on issues that affect them and their communities.
Students examined what matters to them, considered social issues to research, and participated in public speaking exercises. At the end of the day, several students presented (entertaining!) one-minute speeches to the full class.
Next, each 10th grader will write an impassioned speech for social change on a topic of their choosing. Finalists in Burke's competition will go on to compete against high school students from around the DC region.
