Sponsored by Mikva Challenge, the Project Soapbox competition tasks students with writing an advocacy speech on a social justice issue.
At Burke, all 10th graders participate as a part of their civic engagement framework. They also must identify and volunteer with a local organization that addresses their chosen issue. In the first round, students delivered the speeches to their advisory groups, which each voted on the top speech. The nine selected speakers delivered their speeches at a grade-wide showcase on Tuesday, May 12, and will represent Burke in the citywide competition as juniors.
