A glimpse into how Burke teachers conclude the trimester in meaningful (and delectable) fashion:
Conceptual Chemistry with Morgan
The fictional town of Riverwood has experienced a water emergency due to a fish kill in the Snake River, which supplies the town's drinking water and fuels its tourism industry. Taking the role of EPA scientists, 10th graders analyzed water quality indicators, including lead, phosphates, nitrates, and dissolved oxygen, and identified patterns in the data to determine why the fish kill occurred. To wrap up the year, they presented prevention measures to a town council made up of Burke faculty and family visitors.
Environmental Science with Addie
Leading up to final exams, 9th and 10th graders crafted their own three-dimensional teaching tools to capture and convey central concepts from the course, including the anthroposphere, internal structure of the earth, and weather in farming and agriculture. They also made great use of unconventional materials, from Legos to rocks and grass.
Life Science with Amy
Each spring, 7th graders combine their study of anatomy and physiology with an exploration of First Aid and CPR. To practice those skills in a real world context, they went up the street to DC Fire Station 31 and ran through emergency preparedness drills with the experts.
Modern World History with Curtis
10th graders hosted a History Expo Day where they presented their final research papers to family and visiting classes. The broad range of topics included witch hunts in Papua New Guinea and Ghana, political repression in Lukashenko's Belarus, solitary confinement in Icelandic prisons, and women's rights in Afghanistan.
Spanish 7/8 with Tyler
As a year-end treat, Tyler's wife Mariamnny visited his class and offered a hands-on lesson in making arepas, a tasty griddlecake from her home country of Venezuela.
