School Before School

While classes do not begin until Wednesday, September 7, our Van Ness campus has been bustling for the last several weeks. Here's a brief overview of programs for students in the weeks before school.
Fall Athletics
High School athletes have the option to return for two weeks of practices before school begins, with Middle School joining in the second week. Pre-season practices are not a requirement, and both experienced and brand-new athletes are encouraged to use these two weeks to meet their peers and try out volleyball, cross country, or soccer – maybe for the first time. Thanks to Burke's "no cut" policy, any student who wants to a spot on an athletic team will have one.

College Applications
Our College Counseling Office hosts four days of Application Workshops in the final week of August, which include a detailed walk-through of the Common App, assistance with personal statements, and dedicated time to get a (supported) jump-start on applications.

Leadership Team
Rising 11th and 12th graders who hold (or are aspiring to hold) leadership roles in the coming year – be that for an affinity group, in student government, or for Founders' Day – were invited to gather for training with our Leadership Program faculty. Discussion points include setting agendas, leading efficient meetings, and planning long-term projects.

School Gatheringpictured
Finally, to mark the final week before classes, students, parents, teachers, staff, and trustees gather for an informal evening of food (and general merriment) at Rock Creek Park. After two cancelled gatherings, one due to the pandemic and another due to weather, this event boasted a distinct, celebratory energy.
