Anti-Oppressive Education

Last month, Teachers College Press (Columbia University) released Anti-Oppressive Education in "Elite" Schools: Promising Practices and Cautionary Tales From the Field, edited by Katy Swalwell and Daniel Spikes.
The third section of the anthology (“Promising Practices?”) opens with an essay by Head of School Damian Jones, longtime faculty member Stacy Smith, and past faculty members Christiane Connors and Steven Lee, entitled “Living Up to Our Legacy: One School's Effort to Build Momentum, Capacity, & Commitment to Social Justice.”

Founded in the late 1960s, Burke began with a vision to develop active, responsible citizen-leaders – and delivering on such a vision requires ongoing introspection and subsequent work. In recent years, with support from an E.E. Ford Grant and resident scholar Dr. Swalwell, Burke re-crafted our social change programming, eliminating a service hours requirement in favor of a year-long, integrated curriculum and long-term partnerships with local service organizations.
