With Gratitude for Nigel and Lucy

Two long-time Burke community members will be retiring in June 2021. Please join us in sharing your good wishes and boundless appreciation!

Nigel Hinshelwood, Academic Dean & Interim Asst. Head of School for Program
Burke Tenure: 1987-2021

Lucy Kernan-Schloss, Ph.D., School Psychologist
Burke Tenure: 2005-2021
Hired by Burke's founders, Jean Mooskin and Dick Roth, to teach in the English Department in the 1987-88 school year, Nigel has since developed and led the Senior Seminar Program, guided our Professional Development Committee, and of course served as Academic Dean. Today, Nigel is one of the longest serving members of our school community – know for his intellectual rigor, quick wit, and deep care for each teacher and student at Burke.

Proud parent of twin alumni Julia '06 and Abigail '06, Lucy has been a wise, caring, and sensitive presence at Burke for years. In that time, countless parents have benefited from her fall "Lucy workshops," students from her support and welcoming office in Calvin, and teachers and staff from her mentorship and counsel.
Co-ed, progressive, college prep school in Washington, DC featuring a challenging curriculum in an inclusive environment for grades 6-12.
