Class & Club Spotlight - High School - Part 8

Path to the Ocean
Last Friday, Isaac B. '17 joined Addie's Environmental Science class (via Zoom) to talk about his work with NOAA Fisheries. Isaac joined their Office of Science & Technology right after graduating from Emory University in 2021. While earning a master's degree from Duke University, he researched the use of drones to study changes to coastal ecosystems; today, Isaac "uses drones to monitor the health of endangered North Atlantic right whales from the skies" for the NEFSC Whale Ecology Branch.
Join Together in Jazz
On March 5-7, Burke Bands (Intermediate and Advanced) teamed up with GDS Jazz and guest artist Ruby Laks in celebrating jazz in the region. On Thursday evening, students from Burke and GDS, along with Ruby, jammed with the John Howard Trio up at Little Beast on Connecticut Avenue. On Saturday, Ruby adjudicated performances from Burke, GDS, and Bullis – building connections across independent school instrumental music programs.

Making an Impression
Maureen reports back from a recent morning at the National Gallery of Art: "Advanced Art History learned about the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists in situ at the National Gallery. Focusing on materials, students learned about the unusual construction of Degas' dancer sculptures from discarded materials and the peculiar everyday substrate embraced by Toulouse-Lautrec – cardboard!"
