Class Spotlight - Part 2

Microscopic Work
In Life Science with Amy, 7th graders are working with microscopes, creating their own wet mount slides to examine a variety of plant matter. Common in biology classes, a wet mount is "the technique of placing small section of infected tissue in a droplet of water for viewing with the compound microscope."
Impacts on the Earth
In 10th grade Environmental Science with Addie, students crafted presentations on different environmental problems (and their corresponding research and potential solutions). Izzy M. '28 presented on microplastics and the greater health of the ecosystems, culminating in a microplastic "scavenger hunt" around the lab. Robert D. '28 discussed the rise of lung-based fungal infections due to climate change. He brought in portobello mushroom caps as a visual aid, which have since taken up residence on Addie's desk.

Evolution & Cooperation
In Social Psychology with David, 11th and 12th graders are exploring the origins of helpful emotions and behaviors, such as altruism, love, cooperation, and trust. Students have made graphical representations of "kin selection" (the idea that helping out family members is evolutionary advantageous) and played a simulation game called The Evolution of Trust. Based on the prisoner's dilemma, the game illustrates how trust and cooperation (and cheating and lying!) could have evolved.
