Class & Club Spotlight - High School - Part 7

Stacks of Possibility
In AP US History, research at a collegiate library is a requirement for the social justice paper in the winter trimester. This past Saturday, Maureen reports that 11th graders met up at the Georgetown University Library, assembling a wealth of scholarly and primary sources and enjoying the study spaces.

Framing the City
Digital Photography 9/10 and 11/12 are finding plenty to fill the frame – from the National Zoo to the Botanic Gardens to our neighborhood streets in Van Ness. Be sure to pause on the Hobbes stairs as the walls fill with new photography in the coming months.
Gallery of Germs
Morgan encourages one and all to visit the Medical Microbiology museum exhibit, now open in the 2nd floor hallway outside the Biology Lab. She adds, "The exhibit explores bacterial diseases that commonly infect humans. But please do not touch the 3D models!" A trimester elective for 11th-12th graders, this course moves from the basic functions of the lymphatic (immune) system to infectious diseases, both viral and bacterial.

A Massive Mystery
Kelly F. reports that all of the scales and rulers were broken in the Physics Lab last week! (Not really, but it was a noble fib.) She explains, "students were challenged to determine the mass of a toy car using only a spring with an unknown spring constant, two masses of known values, and a motion detector. They were not given instructions and had to come to the process on their own, drawing on their understanding of conservation of energy of a mass oscillating on a spring." In the end, Kelly revealed the (unbroken) scales, so each group could measure the mass of the car on a scale and calculate a % error. One group got as close as 1.5%.

Exploring Our Environment
Environmental Science continues to hit the road (or the trail). 9th graders headed downtown to the Hall of Geology, Gems, and Minerals at the Natural History Museum. Addie reports that they appreciated the Earthquake Study Station and spontaneously coordinated how to record an earthquake on the seismograph. That same week, Environmental Science 10 donned hip waders and braved chilly weather to test the water quality in Rock Creek.
