Our identity as an urban school in DC provides inspiration and opportunity to engage students in experiential education. While field trips are a crucial ingredient, the recipe for experiential learning goes beyond that. This approach calls students to learn by doing and then by reflecting on what they've done.
At Burke, that can look like 8th grade students studying the history of the American Civil Rights Movement, culminating in a week-long trip to Selma, Birmingham, and Montgomery. Or the 6th grade exploring DC neighborhoods and cultural sites, and then crafting group projects on each ward of the District. Or the capstone Senior Project in 12th grade, when students can pursue a serious interest or partner with a community organization full-time –and then return to Burke to share their work with 6th-11th graders.
