Environmental Albatross

Amy successfully applied to a US Fish and Wildlife Service program and received a Laysan Albatross bolus (indigestible material from the bird's gut) for the 7th grade to examine in Life Science class.
Collected at the Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, the boluses reveal how much plastic a bird might consume. Student found bottle caps, netting, buttons, fishing line, and a variety of microplastics.

Next up, the 7th grade plans to collect large (64 oz) and small plastic beverage containers to make DIY trawl nets and fish for microplastics in nearby streams.
