Combustion Engine Grants: Part 2

Each summer, the Professional Development Committee awards Combustion Engine Grants, which enable our faculty to enrich teaching and curricula in innovative ways.

On February 27, 2023, Mustafa N. (History) presented on his funded projects from Summer 2022.
Drawing on students' interest in international affairs, world history, and economics as history, Mustafa developed a new trimester elective for the upper grades: Social and Economic Systems. A summertime Combustion Engine project proved optimal, "[offering] a structured way to take ideas that you have wanted to implement in your classroom and make them into a reality."

A project-based class in Fall 2022, Social and Economic Systems explored the role of wealth in human society and culminated in two final assignments:

1) Memo to the World Bank on economic growth strategies for a country of their choice. The team researching Bangladesh proposed seven growth areas to improve economic stability, including factory safety, government transparency, and natural disaster action plans.

2) "Choose your own adventure" style digital game, enabling classmates and others to explore the possibilities detailed in the memo in an interactive way. The team researching Colombia asked players to select amon three governmental strategies (fighting corruption, manufacturing, and energy) and then progress from there:
