Bold + Balanced in High School

Burke students pursue subjects at a high-level – ranging from multivariable calculus to Spanish literature to microbiology research – while also having space to explore new interests and enjoy their high school years. We hold students to high expectations, and we find the challenges that motivate them as individual learners.

Key to that exploratory spirit is Burke’s urban location. We’re adjacent to the Metro, multiple bus lines, and two major universities. 9th grade Environmental Science has Rock Creek as their vast lab space (hip waders sometimes required), while History 9: The Ancient World can easily metro to the Smithsonian museums. This location also enables real student independence, from open campus for lunch to commuting via metro, bus, bike, and feet.

Our focus on access (and "no cut" policy) means that students can pick up a new instrument, try a new sport, and delve into robotics or journalism for the first time during high school. Burke builds civic engagement into the school day, keeping students attuned to the broader world – and how they might make positive change within it.
