Launching Phase 1

Damian Jones, Head of School

I hope you are enjoying a restful summer. After years of anticipation, we are excited to begin the renovation of Mooskin-Roth Hall. This will constitute Phase 1 of our project and include the following:

  • a large community space for student gatherings
  • a servery area for lunch
  • more classroom space
  • new office spaces  n
  • ew fitness center and locker rooms
  • new space for ceramics enhanced gym
  • HVAC system
  • improved accessibility to all floors

Phase 1 will begin over the summer with a completion date in January 2022. Once the new school year begins, we will begin planning for Phase 2 – which will focus on the entryway, amphitheater, and outdoor space around Mooksin-Roth Hall.

Phase 1 will mainly affect our PE classes and indoor athletic programs because the gym and the locker rooms often won't be accessible. Therefore, in the fall:
  • PE classes will be held in alternative spaces
  • Volleyball will be held in alternative spaces or off-site, and team members will receive more details on Friday; as soccer and cross country take place outdoors, we expect the impact to be minimal
  • PE faculty and Athletics staff offices will move to a temporary location
Other adjustments will include:
  • Two high school classrooms will move to a temporary on-campus location
  • Ceramics and Photography classes will also shift locations temporarily
  • Students should continue to bring their own lunch until the new servery is complete
  • Some other first floor offices may be temporarily relocated as well

While there may be some disruptions throughout this time, we will actively manage the project to ensure smooth school operations and maintain all programming for our students. We had hoped to make more headway before students returned to school, but have found that the pandemic continues to affect supply chains and permit approvals – and so we need to plan for continued work in the fall.

We are grateful for the many ways that past and present parents, faculty, staff, and alumni have made this ambitious project possible. Your time, attention, and generosity will greatly enhance the student experience at Burke for years to come.
