The Migration Series

In Isabel M.'s 2-D Visual Art course, 9th and 10th grader each recreated one of the panels of The Migration Series (1941) by Jacob Lawrence, in the style of contemporary artist Mickalene Thomas.
According to the MOMA, "owned jointly by The Museum of Modern Art and The Phillips Collection, Washington, DC, this epic series dramatically depicts the post–World War I migration of African-Americans from the rural South to the industrial North." Born more than five decades after Lawrence, Thomas is a "contemporary American artist best known for her depictions of African-American women and celebrities through collages of acrylic, enamel, and rhinestones," according to Artnet. In that respect, this project continues to connect contemporary reality (and art) with the past.
