Advancing Equity at the Local Level
To conclude their first semester Health, Values, and Ethics (HVE) course, the 8th grade focused on local history, and the people who fought for the advancement of Black rights here in the District.
Drawing on the resources of the DC Historic Preservation Office's African American Civil Rights Tour, students have created artistic work and mini-documentaries, centered on equality in the capitol.

8th grade projects included:
- Graphic about the Drum & Spear Bookstore, founded in the same year as Burke (1968)
- Mini-documentary about Sousa Middle School and DC's role in school integration
- Mini-documentary about Charles Hamilton Houston, a DC attorney who helped dismantle Jim Crow laws
- Poster dedicated to Ruth Bates Harris, a whistleblower for racist practices at NASA
