Return to On-Campus Instruction

As the next phase of our reopening plan, Burke welcomed back our primary "entry grades" this past week – and our Connecticut Avenue campus instantly became much brighter, notably louder, and one step closer to a return for all students.

While we would have preferred more creative desk configurations and more high-fives on the stairs, the goal for now is to keep everyone healthy and to move forward safely as a community.
Assuming local conditions continue to be met, this phase will continue up to winter break. Students are also welcome to remain in the remote program and join all their classes through Zoom. For remote students, we have set aside extra time for "virtual advisory;" for in-person students, we have built in outdoor, supervised "mask breaks" (with markers on the ground to ensure enough physical distance).

Currently, 70% of the 6th graders and 63% of 9th graders have opted for in-person. 6th graders are on-campus Tuesday-Friday. 9th graders are divided into "Team Roth" and "Team Mooskin" (named for Burke's founders) and attend on alternate days. This system has enabled us to transition back to campus at very low capacity, with the goal of inviting all interested students back by late January.

For certain, this is a new way to participate in school. But it is also a temporary way, and the flexibility, creativity, and maturity on display this week bode well for what is next.
