Overview

Program & Philosophy

The mission of our Athletic Department is to create an atmosphere where students feel safe and learn to challenge themselves and their teammates in a way that builds skills, confidence and character. We emphasize sportsmanship, hard work, commitment, and respect for everyone on the playing field. Our philosophy comes from the Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA), a nonprofit founded by Stanford University that rejects the "win-at-all-cost" model of coaching in favor of coaches who want to win but have a second, more important, goal of using sports to teach broader lessons.

At Burke, we encourage students to play any sport that interests them. In fact, we have a no-cut policy. This has not made us any less competitive--we have won several Potomac Valley Athletic Conference (PVAC) championships in track & field, softball and soccer. Burke teams also compete in the Independent School Boys Volleyball League, and the Washington Metropolitan Prep School Swimming and Diving League. Burke alumni report that the opportunity to try out a new sport was one of the best things about their Burke educations, helping them uncover talents they might never have known they had.
